    Plaquenil helps joint pain

My rheumatologist is running tests but thinks I have a mixed connective tissue disease. I noticed plaquenil helping with my fatigue more so than anything else. I just want some relief from the knee, shoulder and wrist pain. It does help my joint pain but I need extra help from other meds too It can take up to 6 months to get in your system and fully work, each person is different.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a drug that is classified as an anti-malarial drug. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more. Talk to your doctor about this, but my guess is that the Plaquenil is not doing anything to cause the pain, but rather that it is not doing enough to prevent it. It sounds like your RA has probably gotten a bit out of control, relative, to your current treatment, and Plaquenil is not a particularly potent drug when it comes to managing joint pain. Today, Plaquenil and other antimalarials are also used to treat and help prevent symptoms caused by certain autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA, systemic lupus erythematosus, and discoid lupus, even though these diseases are not caused by malaria parasites. Plaquenil belongs in a class of medications known as disease-modifying.

If it does not help the joint pain be sure to talk to your doctor, there are other meds they can give you to help. From what I understand, it is "the first line of defense" and definitely worth a try! I pray it doesn't take that long for you to get some relief. Plaquenil was great for the pain and swelling but did almost nothing for the fatigue. Of all the meds, Plaquenil was the best for me and helped the most, but some people don't tolerate it.

Chloroquine C18H26ClN3 - PubChem Chloroquine is a 4-aminoquinoline with antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, and potential chemosensitization and radiosensitization activities. Although the mechanism is not well understood, chloroquine is shown to inhibit the parasitic enzyme heme polymerase that converts the toxic heme into non-toxic hemazoin, thereby resulting in the accumulation of toxic heme within the parasite.
