  5. Hydroxychloroquine is a type of anti-inflammatory medication used to treat some types of hair loss such as lichen planopilaris and sometimes discoid lupus and frontal fibrosing alopecia. It is classified as an anti malarial pill because certain closely related medications i.e. chloroquine are actually used to treat malaria infections in some parts of the world.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia, which was first reported 30 years ago, is a condition that is increasing in epidemic proportions, says Jerry Shapiro, M. D. in a presentation given at the 2018 AAD Summer Meeting. Frontal fibrosing alopecia is a patterned variant of lichen planopilaris and predominantly affects postmenopausal women. Doxycyline and tetracycline have been tried because of their anti-inflammatory effects. Plaquenil has been used because of its benefit in patients with discoid lupus erythematosus, another lymphocyte-mediated scarring alopecia. Isotretinoin, dapsone, and thalidomide have all been tried. The main differential diagnoses of LPP include discoid lupus erythematosus, alopecia areata, centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, and folliculitis decalvans. 1–5 A good physical assessment, along with dermoscopic and histological examination, is important to distinguish LPP from such conditions.
